r. Peter
Appelbaum, of Penn State University’s Milton S. Hershey
Medical Center, is the author of the paper at #2 in our Special Topic
on Antibiotic Resistance: "Antimicrobial resistance in Streptococcus
pneumoniae—an overview," (Clin. Infect. Dis. 15[1]:
77-83, July 1992). This paper has been cited 554 times to date. Dr.
Appelbaum offers the following comment on his work in the field.
|
I have been performing research in the field of drug-resistant
pneumococci since 1977, when we uncovered an outbreak of infections
caused by these organisms at a time when they were virtually unknown
in most other countries. Since then these strains have spread
throughout the world and my ongoing expertise on this subject has
proved useful in evaluating new agents, looking for new resistance
mechanisms, and characterizing the spread of these strains in
different countries.
The importance of these strains can be gauged by the fact that
Wyeth Lederle has recently licensed a vaccine (Prevenar) to help
prevent infections caused by these strains.
