Hanns Möhler answers a few questions about this month's emerging research front in the field of Pharmacology & Toxicology.

Pharmacology & Toxicology
Article: Analysis of GABA(A) receptor function and dissection of the pharmacology of benzodiazepines and general anesthetics through mouse genetics
Authors: Rudolph, U;Mohler, H
Journal: ANNU REV PHARMACOL TOXICOL, 44: 475-498, 2004

ST:  Why do you think your paper is highly cited?

With knock-out and knock-in genetic strategies, a new methodology was brought to bear on the dissection of the major inhibitory signal transduction system in the brain.

ST:  Does it describe a new discovery, methodology, or synthesis of knowledge?

A new pharmacology of benzodiazepine drugs (e.g. Valium) has been discovered. In the future, tranquillizing drugs without sedation can be developed on a rational basis, a goal which seemed elusive for the last 30 years.

ST:  Could you summarize the significance of your paper in layman’s terms?

Society will benefit from a future breakthrough in drug development.End
