ST:  Why do you think your paper is highly cited?

It was the first paper to address methods for accessing the millions of pages of internal tobacco industry documents released as a result of the Master Settlement Agreement between the states Attorneys General and the major tobacco companies in the U.S. These documents offer a wealth of information not previously available to researchers and the public, including industry scientific efforts and use of lawyer-influenced science to obstruct public health policies, attempts to obstruct tobacco control advocates, marketing information (including the ways the industry targets and segments various markets), policy and public relations strategies used, and much, much more. Because these data were not available in the past, many researchers across multiple disciplines are now involved in studying the documents.

ST:  Does it describe a new discovery or new methodology that's useful to others?

It offers assistance to researchers exploring this massive new dataset which is poorly indexed.

ST:  How did you become involved in this research?

I have had a longstanding interest in tobacco control policy and industry influences on health and health policy.End
