ST:  Why do you think your paper is highly cited?

The work described in this paper demonstrates that DNA microarray gene expression profiles can discover cancer subclasses that cannot be detected by traditional histological techniques. Molecular markers identified by expression profiling can be used to predict tumor outcome more accurately than clinical criteria currently in use.

ST:  Does it describe a new discovery or new methodology that's useful to others?

The supervised and unsupervised methods described in the paper are generally applicable for the analysis of large datasets generated by microarray expression profiling and other genomic approaches to biologic questions.

ST:  Could you summarize the significance of your paper in layman's terms?

The results presented in this paper demonstrate that molecular markers significantly improve our ability to identify good- and poor-risk childhood brain cancer at the time of initial diagnosis, enabling clinicians to treat poor-risk patients more aggressively to improve survival and to treat good-risk patients with reduced doses of therapies that have the potential to permanently injure the developing nervous system.

ST:  How did you become involved in this research?

We have been interested in the molecular basis of cancer for over a decade.End
