ST:  Why do you think your paper is highly cited?

“...we hope to find the effectiveness of these antioxidants compared to other known antioxidants should they be unique to tropical plants”

The study of antioxidant-obtained natural resources has been gaining interest due to the possibility of their use in the prevention of degenerative diseases as well as the onset of aging. In addition, antioxidants obtained from such resources may also be used as preservatives in foods, cosmetics, and other products.

ST:  Does it describe a new discovery or new methodology that's useful to others?

It describes the potential of new antioxidants found in tropical fruits that are likely to be more powerful than those found from other resources. Various papers have also been published with regard to the antioxidant capacities found in tropical vegetables. Methods have been developed to analyze antioxidant components of these fruits and vegetables.

ST:  Could you summarize the significance of your paper in layman's terms?

Some fruits are found to have very high antioxidant capacities compared with certain other fruits which have been identified worldwide. This paper shows that there is a lot of potential in certain tropical plants to contain compounds which are likely to contribute to the prevention of many dreaded degenerative diseases inherent in the aging process. This effect is believed to be attributable to the antioxidant activities contained within these plants. The analysis of these antioxidants is the starting point in an investigation to unveil the likely secrets of tropical fruits, hopefully leading to the possibility of a healthier lifestyle.

ST:  How did you become involved in this research?

We realize the significance of antioxidants in the field of biomedical science, food science, etc. We are hoping to get an idea of what antioxidants can be found in local plants and to study their potential in various applications. In addition, we hope to define the effectiveness of these antioxidants when compared with other known antioxidants should they be found to be unique to certain tropical plants.End
